Omschrijving

In the late Roman Empire a new breed of military emperors emerged who, unlike the cultured Antonine emperors from the Senatorial class, were new men with obscure origins and who rose to power from the ranks of the army. This book undertakes a detailed analysis of the role of the army in imperial politics from AD 235 to 395. It shows that without the support of the army an emperor’s position was untenable and that each emperor needed to employ a range of strategies to keep the army loyal to their cause. Such strategies included providing the army with regular monetary and in kind payments, disseminating ’propaganda’ designed to show the emperor as an effective military leader and bestowing a range of honorific rewards on the army.
