Kaladin didn’t get the expected miserable death of a miserable slave, but was given command of the royal bodyguards. This appointment is controversial, because Kaladin is the first with such a role as a low-status “darkeyes.” The new commander must protect the king and Highprince Dalinar from every peril as well as the uncommon threat of the Assassins. With this hard job Kaladil also has to find out about his new powers of a Windrunner and trying to keep them a secret.
Shallan bears a terrible burden. She and her mentor Jasnah are preventing the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secret for this terrible task lies at the Shattered Plains. Arriving there is more difficult than she could ever imagine.
This second book of the series was first delayed due to the fact that Sandserson helped finishing the series The Wheel of Time by writing the final book. Most fantasy readers know Brandon of this final book, but fall in love with his other work when reading more of his many series.
